Silent Auction Wrap Up May 15, 2007

CFC Silent Auction 2007

We had a beautiful evening for the 2nd annual silent auction this year!

I think it’s agreed that we all had a great night, and as always it was a reminder that we have a wonderful community of people and families. If nothing else, it’s a way to see everyone and connect in a way we don’t always get to.

The donations of goods and services were up over last year by a third and they were truly fantastic!! I think we had over 90 items. We almost didnt’ have room to display everything. Thank you to everyone who so generously came forward with something to auction off. Attendance was down a bit from last year, could it have been the Mother’s day weekend obligations many people had? And although folks were generous, this also meant some people got killer deals – lucky ducks!! I know I did.

I feel really proud of all the hard work that people did putting this together. Special thanks to Amy for handling so many of the day-of logistics. Thank you EVERYONE! I’m really looking forward to planning an even better event for next year!

This week was fun, we had a lot of kids come and help make some sculpture. We mixed some plaster with some water in a ziploc bag. We mushed it around for a bit (this actually took longer than expected and the adults had to finish!). Once our sculptures dried, we took them out of the bags and painted them. Remember to hold on to any artwork made during a CFC event, we are going to have an Art Show in May!

Here’s the sculpture recipe:

  • 2 parts plaster (in this case we used 1 cup of plaster of paris)
  • 1 part water (here we used 1/2 cup water)
  • ziploc bag

  • Place ingredients in a ziploc bag
  • Seal the bag, squeezing out all the air
  • Start mushing the bag around until mixture is hard.
  • Let sit for a few minutes – then rip/cut the bag away from the plaster.
  • Let sit for about 10 more minutes allowing all the moisture evaporate and the sculpture to cool.
  • Paint with paint!

VOILA! Sculpture…

  • Try mixing with warm water and letting it sit for a few minutes before the kids start mushing it about, probably won’t take so long to set.
  • Mix in a few drops of paint so the plaster has a color.
  • HAVE TONS OF FUN!!! and take pictures of your kids making art.

Super DUPER thanks to Heather, Sean and Louisa for another fab (my first) Annual Pumkin Carving Party. All the different pumpkins were amazing. I had tons of fun getting the goo out of my pumpkin. What did happen to that big bucket of pumpkin guts? Will Heather, Sean and Louisa be roasting and eating pumpkin seeds for the next 30 years?

I think the name says it all. Every Wednesday, during the drop in playgroup from 9:30am to 11:30am come and get in the goo! We paint, we stamp, we glue, we play with moon mud and make contact paper pictures with glitter, leaves, feathers and whatever else will stick.  Kids that don’t want to get into the mess can play with toys or read books.  The perfect chance to make messy stuff and not have it in your house!
