Amy and Alice of The Old Creamery Grocery in Cummington are organizing an Earth Day in Cummington, Sunday, April 22!  There will be workshops and events for the whole family (stay tuned for a list of things happening…)

To help you get into the spirit of Earth Day (most of you are doing your best everyday to make a difference anyway), I thought we could start a list of things we could do to make a difference.  If you have an idea, post it in the comments section (it’s easy!!!).

Here are a few links:

I use reusable food containers for our lunches and leftovers. I did invest in a good set, but also have some inexpensive “disposable” containers that I’ve used for over a year. It really cut down on my plastic wrap and foil waste. I try to buy food in large containers instead of single servings.

I’ve made our family some fabric bags to use when we go shopping, and carry around a shopping bag, for those little things around town, so I don’t need a paper or plastic bag. You can see the bag I made here.

We use cloth bags for grocery shopping too. Not only are they earth-friendly, but they also work much better than paper bags. They can hold a lot more, and they never rip!

We also use cloth diapers on the baby, and better yet, try to go diaper-free as much as possible (most babies around the world don’t wear diapers). Zeben (5 months old) uses the potty more than 50% of the time, and we are working towards ditching the diapers all together. You can see Zeben sitting on his potty here: http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/z/zebensky

We use as little electricity as possible, and unplug things like the TV, VCR/DVD player, baby monitor, stereo when not in use.

We try to buy locally as much as possible.

I invested in good quality glass storage bowls with plastic lids that I use to bring leftovers to work for lunch. I try to carpool as much as I can, now that I commute to Greenfield every day. After years of working at home, and prior to that, living in cities where I took public transportation to work and didn’t even own a car, it feels like such a waste to drive by myself to town, knowing that there are so many other people on the road doing the same thing at the same time. Carpooling can be tricky because as a society we are so used to having complete freedom to come and go as we please, but I enjoy it despite the logistical challenges because it’s social, the time goes faster, I use less gas, and less carbon-dioxide goes into the atmosphere. So if you work in Greenfield too and want to carpool from the hilltowns, let me know!

We’re currently on a campaign to replace all our lightbulbs, or as many as we can, with compact florescent.
And we’re going to hang a clothes line for the first time this summer, if winter ever ends!:)
Honestly, we should have a wind turbine up here on the hilltop, maybe we’ll look into that this year!
